Gap Infrastructure Corporation proudly supports the FNB Wines2Whales Epic Series for how it celebrates endurance, teamwork, and the community impact it brings through sport. Wines2Whales is one of the most popular South African mountain biking events today and forms part of the globally respected Epic Series. Riders take on three days of mountain biking in the Western Cape, with different event formats designed for various riding styles and goals. We’re proud to stand alongside the event once again this year, and if you aren’t participating, you’re still invited to follow along in support!
Our Journey with the FNB Wines2Whales
GIC’s partnership with the event began in 2024 as part of a three-year agreement, with GIC an official title and headline sponsor partner to the Absa Cape Epic. As our CEO, Roelof van den Berg, said at the time, “We’re no stranger to the world of sports, having sponsored several cycling and running events and teams in the past. Our in-house team has even participated in the Absa Cape Epic, and the event has become a favourite for its unmatched landscapes and spirit of adventure.” Our partnership with the FNB Wines2Whales represents our dedication to changing lives through the work we do and the initiatives we support. Through our partnership with the event, we aim to bring about even more positive change in South Africa, which you can learn more about by talking to us today.
This Event is More Than Your Average Cycling Race
Events in the Epic Series bring people together around fun-filled goals and the high standards of organisation. Wines2Whales encourages the same culture of resilience and teamwork over three focused days on the bike. We support this because it reflects how we approach projects at GIC, where careful planning, collaboration, and measurable outcomes always matter. Our mission is to change lives by delivering world-class infrastructure and backing partnerships that reflect community-centred teamwork and service. Those values are visible at Wines2Whales and across the Epic Series, where riders test their limits over a tough 200 km distance and work together to reach the finish line.
We believe in creating positive change through corporate sports partnerships and take pride in aligning with platforms that prize this kind of excellence.
It’s All About the People You Meet on the Trail
Wines2Whales is memorable because of the remarkable people who make it happen. This includes the organisers, partners, and riders who line up each year to take part in a celebrated stage race within the Epic Series calendar. The atmosphere is always welcoming and exciting, the routes are well curated, and the community spirit is unmistakably South African!
We Show Up Proudly Every Year
Our involvement in Wines2Whales focuses on team participation and clear alignment with our purpose as an infrastructure partner. We also encourage our staff and partners to engage with the sport through cycling or just cheering from the sidelines. We strive to:
- Support well-run, rider-focused experiences that boost community impact.
- Encourage internal participation within GIC through cycling to promote health and teamwork.
- Back purposeful corporate sports partnerships that mirror our own service ethos.
We plan early around the event calendar, align logistics with organisers, and even motivate our GIC cycling group to get involved too.
There Are Lessons to Be Learned
We feel the lessons learned while cycling at the event translate directly to the infrastructure development sector. Endurance, close collaboration, and careful planning are the qualities we rely on to deliver infrastructure that improves daily life. These are the same qualities celebrated at the annual event, and we believe they build trust both on site and on the trail, which is why we value such long-term partnerships. We enjoy the FNB Wines2Whales because it embraces the same spirit of disciplined teamwork and resilience that we apply to our work at GIC.
