We Celebrated Heart, Grit, and Community at the 2025 Absa Cape Epic

The 2025 Absa Cape Epic pushed limits this year, and so did the GIC team, proudly riding, cheering, and supporting every heart-pounding kilometre along the way. Some events are more than just sports because they become stories of determination, resilience, and team spirit. For Gap Infrastructure Corporation, being part of this year’s Absa Cape Epic wasn’t just about branding; we wanted to show up for something bigger, and Team GIC definitely brought their A-game!

Our Focus on Building Community

Anyone who knows about us understands that GIC is all about people first, creating opportunities, showing up in fundamental ways, and building a sustainable future for South African communities. This same spirit was alive and well at the 2025 Absa Cape Epic. The route was harsh, the climbs unforgiving, and the conditions more challenging than ever, yet GIC was there, fully invested as a team sponsor and supporter of the individuals taking on the race of a lifetime. With a route that covered over 700 km of rugged Western Cape terrain and nearly 16 000 metres of climbing, this was both a test of athletic ability and character.

What Makes the Cape Epic One of the World’s Toughest Races

Billed as the Tour de France of mountain biking, the Absa Cape Epic is the most televised mountain bike race in the world and holds the coveted hors catégorie status from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) – a rare honour that speaks volumes about its intensity and prestige. It’s a full-service, eight-day stage race where both members of each two-person team must complete every stage together. Only 680 teams make the cut each year, and every route is different, designed over two years by experts to test even the most seasoned riders.

This year’s route served up untamed fynbos, steep rocky climbs, thrilling descents, and gut-punching ascents, all under the scorching sun, cold rain, and thick mud. Some days were so gruelling that just finishing was a badge of honour. What makes the Cape Epic truly special is not just the race itself but the energy it creates around it. Riders, sponsors, support crews, and fans all contribute to a week-long celebration of endurance sport at its highest level. The event draws in thousands of spectators, generates international coverage, and inspires communities across the country. For GIC, being part of something that brings people together in such a meaningful way aligns perfectly with our values because it’s about being present where real passion and progress intersect.

Team GIC Rose to the Challenge!

Among the riders this year was a group of GIC athletes who were determined, disciplined, and wearing their GIC gear with pride. More than competitors, they were ambassadors for what GIC believes in: perseverance and purpose. Stage 3 was a standout. It was one of the toughest days in the entire race, with scorching heat, punishing hills, and a course that broke many. But not Team GIC. Against all odds, they achieved victory! It was all about showing heart, and the GIC team displayed this in their grit, teamwork, and the way they pushed each other forward.

Our Commitment to Community Will Continue

Whether it’s on a project site or during an event like this, our culture of changing lives, lifting each other up, and leading with heart remains consistent. It’s no surprise that the GIC riders spoke about feeling truly supported. They weren’t alone, and we were there to ensure they were taken care of. So, why does a leading infrastructure development company throw its weight behind a mountain biking event? Because for us, sport is about community involvement and showing character. We believe in backing initiatives that bring people together, show what’s possible, and reflect the values of excellence and tenacity that we live by daily. The Absa Cape Epic challenges people to be more, going further than they thought they could, and leaning on others when it gets hard. That’s the kind of energy we at GIC aim to bring to every corner of our work, too, and it’s why the GIC team felt so at home at the event. The race is a reminder of what’s possible when people come together with purpose.

To the cyclists who rode with passion, to the teams who supported with pride, and to the GIC staff who brought their encouraging spirit, thank you! The 2025 Absa Cape Epic may be behind us, but we will cherish the memories and the pride of knowing that together, we did something unforgettable. For us, this is just the beginning because we know that when people come first, everything else follows.
